DNA Testing for Obesity

Obesity refers to the condition present in people whose proportion of body fat is considered excessive for their height and weight. The standard measurement of obesity is the Body Mass Index (BMI), which calculates an individual’s weight in kilograms divided by his or her height in metres squared. According to the BMI, obesity occurs when a measurement of 30 or greater is recorded; however, the BMI figures can be skewed when dealing with people who have above average muscle mass and bone density. Obesity is often most simply caused by an excessive consumption of calories over time. What constitutes an excessive amount of calories will depend largely on an individual’s metabolic rate, which describes the speed and efficiency with which the body burns off calories. Generally speaking, inactive people will tend to have a slower metabolic rate than those who are more active.

Genetic predisposition DNA testing for obesity is useful in order to identify whether the condition can be caused by genetic factors. In today’s increasingly obese society, extreme financial and administrative strains are being placed on healthcare, insurance and emergency services, so it is important to address the various causes of obesity. Current research has found that a genetic predisposition to obesity does exist, with several genetic factors playing a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of the condition. FTO is one of the most relevant genes associated with obesity and, in a study of 40,000 people, it was found that those carrying one copy of the FTO variant gene are 30% more likely to become obese, whilst those carrying two copies are 70% more likely.
