Semen Detection Test
Timeframe: 10 to 15 working days
A semen detection test is quick and simply test that will enable you to confirm the presence of semen. Your results will be ready in just 10 to 15 working days from the moment we receive your samples. Our semen detection test starts from €125.
Note: This test does not require a kit. Once we confirm your order, you will be sent a confirmation email with a form attached. The form needs to printed, filled out and returned with your sample. Ensure to place the sample to be tested in a paper envelope. If you plan sending in more than 1 sample, contact us for a quote.
The following 3 tests are carried out on the sample sent to confirm or exclude the presence of semen:
Acid phosphatase testing (AP): This is screening test for a protein that is found in human semen. However, this protein can also be found in vaginal fluid which means that if the test result is positive for the protein, we cannot attribute this with certainty to the presence of semen.
PSA testing: PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, a protein produced in the prostate and secreted into the seminal fluid.
Microscopic analysis:The sample is analysed using what is known as the Christmas Tree Test. This test uses certain chemicals that will result in pink, green and red colour changes if semen is detected.
Results for a Semen Detection Testing
Semen detection testing will confirm one of the following two possibilities:
• The sample sent in for testing confirms positive for the presence of semen
• The sample sent confirms negative for the presence of semen
We always suggest sending as large a sample as possible. If the sample is found on any type of clothing or under garment, we suggest you cut out the area where the stain appears and send this for testing. Our laboratory staff cannot spend time trying to locate stains on samples sent in.
Further DNA Testing for Comparison
A semen identification test will only confirm whether the sample sent in contains semen. It is not a DNA test. In order to confirm the identity of the donor, you can proceed with further testing by sending us a comparison DNA sample collected using a mouth swab. We can then carry out a DNA verification test with the semen sample sent for detection testing and compare the DNA profile with that extracted from the mouth swabs. This is all done via actual DNA testing whereby we will extract the DNA profiles from both samples and test them to confirm a match. We suggest you read up more about our infidelity DNA testing services (DNA detection services) by visiting this page.
• It is important to keep in mind that we will first need to carry out a DNA verification test – not all semen samples contain DNA or enough/viable DNA for a comparison test.
• The samples for this test cannot be used for legal purposes or presented in a court of law as they have been verified.
• An infidelity DNA test using semen takes an extra 13 working days in addition to the 10 to 15 working days required for the semen detection test.
Online home semen detection kits are available – these allow you to confirm the presence of semen. Once you have located the stain, you will then need to use a special solution provided in your kit that will change colour when a certain protein found in semen is detected in the stained garment. These type of home kits, have a chance of giving you a false positive result and therefore, we strongly recommend a laboratory based semen detection test to get accurate and reliable results.
The Human Tissue Act
It is important to be aware that in the UK the Human Tissue Act regulates the collection and analysis of any human tissue. This includes any stain of biological material not matter how small. In order to send a sample for analysis, the person or donor of that sample must give their consent in writing in order for us to test their sample. Furthermore, in order to be fully compliant with the Human Tissue Act, the donor of the sample must also be made aware of how their DNA sample will be used.
